Summary of the plot
The series begins with Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), a divorced father and indebted gambler who lives with his elderly mother. He is approached by a well-dressed man who offers him to play a game of ddakji, a traditional Korean game where two players try to flip each other's folded paper tiles. For every win, Gi-hun gets 100,000 won (about $85), but for every loss, he gets slapped in the face. After losing several times, Gi-hun manages to win once and gets his money. The man then gives him a card with a number to call if he wants to play more games with bigger prizes.
Gi-hun decides to call the number after he fails to get custody of his daughter, Ga-yeong (Jo Ah-in), who is moving to America with her stepfather. He is picked up by a van along with other people who are also in deep financial trouble. They are taken to an unknown location where they find themselves among 456 players who are all wearing green tracksuits with numbers on them. They are greeted by masked men in pink jumpsuits who explain that they will play six games over six days. The winner of each game will advance to the next round, while the losers will be eliminated. The prize money for the winner is 45.6 billion won (about $38 million), which is displayed in a giant piggy bank that fills up with cash after each game.
Gi-hun barely survives the first game with the help of a childhood friend, Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo), who is a former stockbroker who embezzled money from his clients. He also befriends Kang Sae-byeok (Jung Ho-yeon), a North Korean defector who is looking for her missing brother, and Ali Abdul (Anupam Tripathi), a Pakistani migrant worker who is exploited by his boss. They soon realize that they are not playing for fun, but for their lives.
After the first game, the players are shocked and terrified by the brutality of the situation. They are given the option to vote to end the games and return to their normal lives, but they have to agree unanimously. The vote is tied at 226 to 226, with Gi-hun being the last one to vote. He chooses to end the games, thinking of his daughter and mother. The players are then released back to the outside world, but they are not happy. They face their harsh realities and debts, and some of them even receive threats from the game organizers. They also receive a card with another number to call if they want to rejoin the games.
Gi-hun decides to call the number after he learns that his mother has a serious illness and needs surgery. He is surprised to see that most of the players have also returned, including Sang-woo and Sae-byeok. They are taken back to the same location where they resume the games. The second game is sugar honeycomb, where the players have to cut out a shape from a thin sheet of honeycomb candy without breaking it. The shapes are randomly assigned and vary in difficulty, from a circle to a star. Gi-hun gets the most difficult shape, an umbrella, but he manages to cut it out with a trick he learned from his childhood.
The third game is tug of war, where the players are divided into teams of 10 and have to pull a rope against another team over a high platform. The losing team falls to their death. Gi-hun's team consists of himself, Sang-woo, Sae-byeok, Ali, and six elderly players, including Oh Il-nam (Oh Young-soo), who claims to have dementia and is number 001. They are matched against a team of strong men who seem to have an advantage. However, Gi-hun's team wins with the help of Il-nam's strategy and Sang-woo's cunning move.
The fourth game is marbles, where the players are paired up and have to play various games involving marbles. The winner of each pair gets 10 marbles, while the loser dies. Gi-hun is paired with Il-nam, who acts senile and playful. Gi-hun tries to trick him into giving up his marbles, but he feels guilty and changes his mind. However, Il-nam reveals that he was aware of Gi-hun's deception and gives him his last marble anyway. Sang-woo is paired with Ali, who trusts him as a friend. Sang-woo betrays him by stealing his marbles and leaving him to die. Sae-byeok is paired with a woman named Jang Deok-su (Jung Suk-yong), who tells her about her family and asks her to take care of her son if she wins. Sae-byeok agrees and lets her win, but Deok-su kills herself anyway.

The fifth game is glass stepping stones, where the players have to cross a bridge of glass panels that are either tempered or normal. The tempered glass can support two people at a time, while the normal glass breaks under one person's weight. There are 16 panels for each row and two rows for each player. The players have 16 minutes to cross the bridge or they all die. Gi-hun's group is the last one to go and they have only three minutes left. They witness many players die in front of them as they try to guess which panel is safe. Gi-hun's group consists of himself, Sang-woo, Sae-byeok, and two other players: Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), a police officer who infiltrated the game as a masked guard to find his missing brother; and In Gyu-tae (Heo Sung-tae), a gangster who has been causing trouble throughout the series.
In Gyu-tae tries to force Hwang Jun-ho to go first, but Hwang Jun-ho fights back and pushes him off the bridge. Hwang Jun-ho then uses his lighter to see which panel is tempered by looking at its reflection. He manages to cross most of the bridge until he reaches the last panel, where he is shot by another guard who recognizes him as his brother. He falls off the bridge, but not before throwing his lighter to Gi-hun, who uses it to cross the last panel. Sang-woo and Sae-byeok follow him, but Sae-byeok gets injured by a shard of glass that pierces her abdomen.
The sixth and final game is squid game, the namesake of the series. It is a traditional Korean game where two players try to push each other out of a squid-shaped boundary. The players can use any means necessary to win, including violence. Gi-hun, Sang-woo, and Sae-byeok are the only ones left, and they are taken to a field where the game is set up. They are given suits and knives, and they have to choose their roles: offense or defense. Gi-hun chooses offense, while Sang-woo and Sae-byeok choose defense. However, before the game starts, Sang-woo stabs Sae-byeok in the neck, killing her. He then faces Gi-hun in a one-on-one duel.
