Browser RPG Games for Chromebook - A Guide to the Most Fun and Free Options

One thing that I really like about RPG MO is that no items become bound to your character. That means if you want to upgrade your gear and sell it off, you can do so in the marketplace without fear of throwing it out. A really nice feature that more games should have.

It is not fully MMORPG, but ETERNIUM is a free one, and after a second download it can be played offline or online. For chromebooks that is innovative. LOL! It reminds of Diablo meets Torchlight kinda games.

Many well-known MMORPGs that require downloads may offer browser alternatives, too. For instance, Runescape (NOT Old School Runescape, though) has both a client download version and a browser version of the popular MMORPG.

The great thing about browser-based MMORPGs is that they can offer players experiences similar to games like World of Warcraft without the need to actually have the game installed on a computer or without some of the higher-end equipment that some games may require.

Multiple games are shared every day. Some games are small, some are big, some are finished, some are still in development. Decide if and when you want to share your game, and let others experience your world and story.

In that, there are a few things that will remind you of larger games, too. For example, Mad World features a large talent tree for extensive player customization. You're also bound to a weapon style that focuses your build type, rather than being bound to a specific class.

Other than that, the art style gives Mad World an almost unique aesthetic. The hand-drawn characters, items, and backdrops help Mad World stand out from a browser MMO crowd that is often happy to mimic the best performing games of the era.

If you played real-time strategy games in the 1990s and early 2000s, you probably remember all-time classic, Command & Conquer. The Tiberium-focused C&C games take their lede from science-fiction, featuring cool futuristic technology you can deploy against your enemies.

In Dead Maze, you're building a better tomorrow in a zombie-infested post-apocalyptic world. The free MMO doesn't require you to download any files, although there is a version of Dead Maze available on Steam.

Stein.World started as a part-time coding project but evolved into a free MMORPG for your browser. Like Dead Maze, you can play Stein.World without downloading any files, but there is also a Steam version available.

The era of browser-based free MMOs was curtailed as many popular internet browsers removed support for Java-based games. Java is considered an unnecessary security risk, although some browsers still allow third-party Java installations.

Many of the most popular free browser-based MMOs depended on Java to run. Without Java, some browser MMOs switched to a non-browser version requiring you to download a program to launch the game (like Runescape). Other browser MMOs decided to cease development from that moment, preserving the game in gaming history.

As you've seen from several entries on this list, new browser MMOs are appearing all the time. The lure of MMOs that require no downloads remains strong. While the number of free MMOs might decrease slightly, the overall quality of story, gameplay, and artwork rises as creators use more advanced tools to craft their worlds.

ChromeOS isn't exactly known as a gaming platform. Most people think about even the best Chromebooks as low-cost machines that work great as a dedicated browser or school laptop. However, it's actually quite easy to enjoy a host of games on your Chromebook or Chromebox.

Most modern Chromebooks support Android apps, which also means Android games. You can also access cloud gaming services from Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia through the Chrome browser, which means AAA PC games on even a modest Chromebook. Other than that, Google has even enabled support for Steam games on ChromeOS in beta, which lets you play some lower-end PC games on your Chromebook locally (though this requires you to switch your Chromebook over to the Beta Channel). There are so many games to choose from, but we've rounded up our favorites across Android and the cloud.

Not all Android games are optimized for ChromeOS. This means your favorite game might technically open on a Chromebook, but would be a terrible playing experience. Many games also require a touchscreen Chromebook to play them properly. Additionally, playing Steam games on ChromeOS requires high-end hardware, like a cloud gaming Chromebook such as the Acer Chromebook 516 GE.

The single largest source for games on ChromeOS is the Google Play Store. If you own a newer Chromebook, you should be able to run Android apps right out of the box. Many older Chromebooks also received an update to enable Android app support. We have a guide to Android apps on ChromeOS that explains how you can get started.

One of the advantages of playing Android games on ChromeOS is familiarity. You already play games on your phone, so why not bring those over to your laptop? Only some Android games are specifically optimized to run on the larger screen of your Chromebook. These games typically make for the best experience on Chrome OS. The Play Store has something for everyone, with millions of options to choose from. Here are our favorite Android games to play on Chrome OS.

Asphalt is a well-known brand in mobile racing. Immerse yourself in one of the most hyper realistic arcade car racing games with Asphalt 9: Legends, with meticulously detailed rebel racing real cars, cool HDR techniques, and stunning visual and particle effects that turn every race into a real blockbuster race movie. Get the most out of this car street racer game with the online multiplayer mode.

This simulation game is one of the best free games you can find and will appeal to those that love The Sims franchise. It's a pretty addictive game, so the in-app purchases can become a problem if you're really into that vault life.

Terraria has been with us for many, many years now, and it's still one of the finest sandbox games ever made. Dig, craft, build, explore, and fight enemies. Terraria has a little bit of everything and is a game you can easily lose hundreds of hours to without even realizing it.

Nvidia's Geforce Now service allows you to buy games from Steam, Epic Games, and Ubisoft and stream them from the cloud. Not all games are supported, but plenty are, and there are new additions every Thursday. All you have to do iscreate an account, link your Steam, Epic, and Ubisoft libraries, and GeForce Now does the rest. The web app is built for Chrome and ChromeOS, and there is a free tier that you can use to check it out first. These are some of the top games from GeForce Now you can play on your Chromebook.

A seriously underrated title, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the best single-player games in recent times. The combat is perhaps the weakest part, but as a whole, it's an absolute treat. The narrative, the characters, and the voice acting all add up to a very Guardians-like experience that's unique from the movies.

Destiny 2 has an incredibly rich story, something lore hunters will truly appreciate. It's constantly evolving, and there is new content almost every week. It can be overwhelming at times because there's so much to do, but there are few better games in this genre.

Shell Shockers is one of those games, with great maps and eggy characters that pop open and ooze yolk when you kill them. Bullet Force and Forward Assault: Remix are two free online FPS games that provide classic, fast-paced and competitive gameplay.

All the first-person shooter games here are free to play in your web browser, with no download required. Many of the best titles are ideally played on PC - or are PC only, but many mobile FPS games are available.

First Person Shooter (FPS) games are shooting games with a first-person perspective. They are often played competitively online. You can use weapons like pistols and shotguns to powerful bazookas and tactically take down your enemies in various locations.

RPG in a Box lets you easily turn your stories and ideas into games and other interactive experiences! As its name suggests, it contains everything necessary for doing so, all packaged together "in a box". The software is designed with a fun, beginner-friendly approach in mind as to not require any programming or modelling knowledge, while still providing a wide range of customization and openness. You can export your game to a standalone format for Windows and MacOS, allowing others to play it without needing to own RPG in a Box!

If you want to get the best gaming experience out of your Chromebook, perhaps you should consider a game streaming service. Sure, they may require a monthly fee, but you eliminate all the compatibility and most performance issues by streaming games from the cloud. Your Chromebook is essentially the receiver, requiring very little resources.

Nvidia takes a different approach with its streaming service. The company knows most PC gamers use Steam, Epic Games, Uplay, and other digital platforms. Rather than make you re-pay for games like Google Stadia, why not stream the games you already own by linking those accounts?

If retro side-scrolling action is your thing, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night will thrust you into one of the best Castlevania games to date. Picking up five years after Rondo of Blood, Maria Renard heads to the reemerged Castlevania to find her missing brother, Richter. Meanwhile, Alucard, the son of Dracula, investigates the castle as well to confront his resurrected father.
